The IMT Des Moines Marathon courses are known for showcasing the city’s skyline with a scenic route, including spectator-filled neighborhoods, university campuses, city parks, and a downtown filled with energy waiting at the finish line.

New in 2024, we eliminated some hills (hello PR!) and added in lively Valley Junction in West Des Moines. Your crisp, Fall morning will begin right in the heart of downtown and runners will cross the river towards the Iowa State Capitol before heading West past the Papajohn Sculpture Park and its’ beautiful art pieces on their way to the iconic Drake Stadium. Run the infamous “Blue Oval” of Drake University where past, present, and future Olympians have toed the line! After returning to Grand Avenue from the historic Kingman Boulevard, runners will continue to West Des Moines, with a highlight of historic Valley Junction. This area is full of shops and great spots to grab a bite so be sure to send your support squad there for a boost of energy. Runners will return back downtown by way of the beautiful trails and parks of Des Moines. Be sure to save a some energy for the “Fitness Sports Speed Zone” where the fastest times of each age group will be rewarded with a gift card to one of the area’s best running shops! This course is flat, fast, and full of spectator energy – a perfect place to BQ and PR!

Ready to set a Half Marathon PR? Look no further than the IMT Half Marathon Des Moines course!
Your crisp, Fall morning will begin right in the heart of Downtown Des Moines where you’ll begin your run by crossing the river and heading towards the Iowa State Capitol. Runners turn back West towards Downtown and past the beautiful Papajohn Sculpture Park and its’ art pieces valuing multi-millions. This is an important spot to pay attention as it is where your course splits off from the IMT Des Moines Marathon. Runners will head South towards the iconic Water Works Park (did you know there’s more acreage than Central Park in NYC?!). Make sure to save some energy for the “Fitness Sports Speed Zone” where the fastest times in each age group will be rewarded with a gift card to one of the area’s best running shops! Once runners cross over into Gray’s Lake Park they will enjoy fan-filled trails and tons of support before heading back downtown to the finish line!

Who wants that selfie on the infamous “Blue Oval” where Olympians are made? Who wants to run through Valley Junction? Who wants the Fitness Sports Speed Zone? Flat, fast, scenic, downtown…. what else could you want out of a beautiful, fall 5K?
Start and finish right in the heart of downtown Des Moines. Runners will spend their 5K surrounded by sky-scrappers, sights of the gold dome from the Iowa State Capitol building and finish at the historic courthouse on the spectator-filled Court Avenue.
