VIRTUAL EVENT FAQ

I am not signed up for anything. How do I register for the virtual event?

The IMT Des Moines Marathon Virtual Event takes place from October 16 through October 31, 2020.

First, register for the IMT Des Moines Marathon Virtual Event race distance that you would like to participate in. Registration for the virtual event in all distances closes Sunday, October 4 at 11:59 pm.

Next, download the IMT Des Moines Marathon app, if you haven’t already. The IMT DMM app and IMT DMM Virtual Event experience are available for free download now through the iTunes and Google Play stores.

Prepare to complete your specific race distance at a date and time that works best for you beginning Friday, October 16 through Saturday, October 31, 2020.

Then, on the day that works best for your schedule, within the established two week period, start your run/walk, and be sure to take the IMT DMM app with you. Once you complete/surpass the necessary mileage distance for your race, your results will automatically be uploaded to the app and ready for submission to onlineraceresults.com for viewing, scoring, and further race results features.

Don’t forget to inform your supporters to download the app, as well as the MOTIGO app, so that they can record personal cheer messages for you to listen to during your run!

How do I transfer my 2020 in-person registration to the virtual event?

It’s simple. Athletes registered for any of the IMT Des Moines Marathon races in 2020 with a paid registration can return to the IMT Des Moines Marathon virtual event registration page and with a few clicks, complete the process to transfer their paid registration in 2020 to the same event category distance offered in the virtual event in 2020. To do so, click here.

Should an athlete with a paid 2020 in-person race registration want to change their race distance offered within the virtual event offerings they can do so at no cost by contacting the IMT Des Moines Marathon directly with their request at info@desmoinesmarathon.com.

Can I defer my 2020 in-person registration to 2021 in-person event, and then register for the virtual event?

Yes. If you would like to defer to next year and participate in the virtual event this year you can do so.

In fact, the virtual event is cheaper than the actual in-person race, so it would be more cost-effective to defer your 2020 in-person, paid race registration to the in-person race in 2021. And, then, complete a separate registration for the virtual race.

I am registered for the 5-Mile Combo. How will that work with the virtual event?

Double your virtual event race experience by combining the IMT Des Moines 5-Mile Virtual Run with your virtual event race of choice in the IMT Des Moines Marathon, IMT Des Moines Half Marathon, or Principal 5K Virtual Run.

Register for the IMT Des Moines 5-Mile Virtual Run, and also register for the virtual event race of choice that you would like to participate in.

You can add both virtual event races to your shopping cart before you proceed to check out.

Or, if you are registered for one of the virtual event races already, and add a new registration for the other event distance of your choice, you will automatically be included in the 5-Mile Combo.

During the two-week window of virtual event participation (Oct. 16 through 31) you can either complete the two virtual race distances on separate occasions (dates), or complete the first distance and have your results automatically uploaded through the IMT DMM virtual event app, and then start the second virtual race distance, in the same continuous run, and receive credit for both.

For example, complete the 5-Mile Combo in the 5-Mile Virtual Run on one day within the two-week window of participation and then complete one of the other virtual race distances on another day. As long as you complete the second virtual event race distance that you have registered for within the two-week window of participation.

Or, complete the 5-Mile Combo in the 5-Mile Virtual Run and Principal 5K Virtual Run by running or walking 8.13 miles at the same time. Start & finish the 5-Mile Virtual Run in the virtual event app, and then on the same workout, start & finish the Principal 5K Virtual Run.

Each athlete receives a special 5-Mile Combo finisher medal charm, in addition to each of the race amenities offered in each virtual event race. You will receive two race shirts and two race wraps, however, you will receive a race-specific 5-Mile Virtual Race finisher medal and a different race-specific race of choice finisher medal for competing in both virtual event races.

In addition, you will receive a commemorative 5-Mile Combo key chain, charm that attaches to your finisher medal.

Double your races. Double your hardware.

What race distances are offered in the virtual event?

The IMT Des Moines Marathon Virtual Event offers you the ability to participate in any of our race distances from any location, anywhere in the world… including your neighborhood. Register now.

Complete a marathon, half marathon, 5-Mile, or 5K distance in a continuous single run during the open event dates, October 16 through 31, just as you would in person. There is no ‘course time limit’ to participate. Walking is welcome!

You can even get a group of 2 to 5 together and participate in the Bankers Trust Marathon Relay, as a virtual event, at any of the offered virtual event race distances, as long as your team participates together towards a continuous single run.

Virtual Event race distances offered include: IMT Des Moines Marathon, IMT Des Moines Half Marathon, IMT Des Moines 5-Mile Run, Principal 5K, and the Bankers Trust Marathon Relay (any distance).

When do I participate in the virtual event?

Prepare and plan to complete your specific race distance on a date and at a time that works best for you beginning Friday, October 16, through Saturday, October 31, 2020.

Then, on the day that works best for your schedule, within the established two week period, start your run/walk, and be sure to take the IMT DMM app and a GPS tracking device with you on your virtual event run or walk.

Can I run or walk my virtual race distance in installments or do I do it all at once?

No. Your virtual event participation must be completed in a continuous, single session. Just as you would in-person on race day on the actual course.

The IMT Des Moines Marathon supports the ability for virtual event participants to submit virtual race results by utilizing and uploading results from a GPS calculated distance tracking device upon completion of the virtual event race distance.

If you are using a tracking device such as Garmin Connect, Strava, Suunto, Nike, Training Peak, Polar, Zwift, MapMyRun, Apple Watch, Fitbit, Runkeeper, or a similar device/app to track your training runs… simply use the same tracking tool to track your virtual event race distance.

These GPS devices will calculate your distance accumulated in ‘real-time’. Many of these devices will analyze the uploaded data and attempt to make corrections for pauses and/or interference that may cause issues in connectivity during your workout.

As a result, you may find it necessary to plan a route that allows you to complete an additional 1/10 of a mile at the end of your virtual race to ensure that your race results meet the required distance.

You also may find it helpful, and are encouraged, to take a screenshot or photo of your virtual event race results for record-keeping purposes.

Where can I run or walk my virtual race?

Wherever you are!

The IMT DMM virtual event allows you to start right outside your front door, on your favorite training route, in your favorite park… or if you live in the Des Moines area on the actual course itself.
