Think back to your 3rd grade self. You’re between 8-9 years old. You’re learning so much in school! You’re starting to read independently, learn multiplication and division, and you might even be able to walk to the bus stop by yourself. 

Now think about the things you enjoyed doing when you were in third grade. Having sleepovers with friends, playing sports, boy/girl scouts, reading, video games … the list goes on! But there’s one thing I KNOW I wasn’t thinking about when I was 8 years old, and that’s RUNNING A 5K. 3.1 WHOLE MILES. Are you kidding? 

That’s just ONE of the BIG goals that Girls on the Run allows 3rd-5th graders to set for themselves during our 10-week program. Running is used to inspire and motivate girls, encourage lifelong health and fitness, and build confidence through accomplishment. Important social, psychological, and physical skills and abilities are developed and reinforced throughout the program. At each season’s conclusion, the girls and their running buddies complete a 5K running event which gives them a tangible sense of achievement as well as a framework for setting and achieving life goals. The result—making the seemingly impossible, possible, and teaching girls that THEY CAN. 

I saw this quote the other day, and it really stuck with me: 

“When you master the seemingly impossible, it does something for you that fits into your very character for a lifetime, and makes the next impossible thing seem that much easier.” 

Now, running a 5K when you’re in 3rd grade seems impossible. I know because some of the girls on my team remind me every day 😉 But when you break down those BIG, CRAZY, IMPOSSIBLE goals into 20 practices – then it seems a little less hard. Throw in some fun activities with your friends, snacks, and socializing and you’re actually having fun along the way! 

The important thing here is that we don’t have to be in 3rd grade to do this – breaking down big goals. One of our GOTR core values is to recognize our power and responsibility to be intentional in our decision making, and we can take that with us no matter our age or skill level. 

So pick that BIG, CRAZY, IMPOSSIBLE goal – break it down into 20 small steps – and have some fun along the way! Your 3rd grade self will thank you for it.
