Message from the race director.

The IMT Des Moines Marathon is scheduled to be held as planned!

As your race director, and a runner myself, I have empathy for the concern and confusion that you may be experiencing about the fall running event schedule. Many of us have had a race that we registered and trained for this spring canceled or postponed, and that trend is now pushing into the summer. We are all anxious to return to races … but when and what will they look like?

According to the RRCA Return to Running Survey, athlete attitudes and perceptions vary (click here) but for the most part, athletes are cautiously optimistic about returning to road races this fall. Within the industry, we are looking for the appropriate guidelines and procedures to follow as we begin to return to running in groups and executing events.
As plans are dependent on the evolving public health situation, I offer the following contingency plan that looks out for your best interests and longevity. This plan provides options so that you can feel comfortable about registering, training, AND participating in the IMT Des Moines Marathon, while we continue planning.
As of May 21, the IMT Des Moines Marathon registration policy for the 2020 event has been expanded to include:
  • Event registration remains open. Spring pricing for all events has been extended a final time through Father’s Day, June 21.
  • A virtual event option is being considered in 2020. Details will be announced as soon as a virtual event option becomes viable.
In the meantime, we are considering a variety of race weekend scenarios to ensure that the event will be held in a safe manner and within the guidelines for mass gatherings. Some of these options include but are not limited to: Reducing the number of days and events, changing the distance(s) and course(s), limiting pre-race and post-race gatherings, no bag/gear check, capping the number of athletes, restricting spectator access, etc.
  • If modifications are made, and if those modifications don’t meet your needs as an athlete, you would have the option to opt-out of this year’s event (fees may apply) and defer your paid registration to 2021.
  • However, race entry fees will not be refunded if the in-person event takes place, is modified, or is canceled in 2020.

Every month I am (virtually) meeting with the City of Des Moines street use team and am conducting a review of our risk assessment plans. Should we not be allowed to execute the 2020 event as planned and we have to cancel the event you will be informed immediately. Otherwise, I will continue to communicate with you through the event bulletin, website, and social media channels.

Again, the IMT Des Moines Marathon is planning for in-person race activities the weekend of October 16-18.
