The IMT Des Moines Marathon is proud to be an official 261 Fearless Partner Event.This means that our event is well-organized, safe and welcoming to women. It is the first coed event ever given this endorsement by 261 Fearless Inc., the empowerment movement organized by the iconic woman runner, Kathrine Switzer. Kathrine was our guest in 2015 and we hope to have her back again in the future.

FEARLESS 261 is named after the famous bib number Kathrine Switzer wore when she ran the Boston Marathon for the first time. The number now stands for ‘Fearless’, and 261 Fearless, Inc is about the community of women who are transformed by running and their global non-profit movement to empower other women everywhere. 64% of the registered athletes in the IMT Des Moines Marathon series of races are women.

WORLD CLASS ATHLETE Kathrine Switzer was the first woman to enter, run and complete the Boston Marathon in 1967. She championed for women’s running and persuaded the Boston Athletic Association to finally allow women participants in 1972. She went on to win the 1974 New York City Marathon, with a time of 3:07:29 (59th overall). Her personal best time for the marathon distance is 2:51:37 at the Boston Marathon in 1975.Kathrine was named Female Runner of the Decade (1967–77) by Runner’s World Magazine.

ICONIC ADVOCATE Athlete, sports and social advocate, author and Emmy award-winning television commentator, Kathrine has been honored widely for her achievements, most recently being inducted into the USA National Women’s Hall of Fame for creating positive social change. The ramifications of this work is both joyful and profound, changing forever the face of sports, health, and opportunities for women around the world and fearlessly empowering millions beyond the finish line.
