One of my favorite things about traveling back to Iowa is being able to run on this trail. Sister’s Trail is a relatively new addition to the options of running trails around Clear Lake, which is surrounded by the towns of Ventura and Clear Lake, IA. While visiting family and friends this past weekend for the Memorial Day holiday I just had to take the time to run this peaceful trail. Although I didn’t see any wildlife beyond squirrels, birds and fish this time, I often see turkey and deer when I run on this trail. The flowers, trees, fields and lake are captivating and always give me a sense of peace and joy. I love running, and I love running my regular trails in Kansas City, but there is nothing like running around Clear Lake. If you haven’t had a chance, it is worth the trip to North Iowa. As a runner I am always looking for ways to add excitement and novelty to the sometimes repetitive routes that I find myself taking. This trail, and others in the area, will not disappoint.
As we devoted IMT DMM runners start thinking about training plans for the upcoming October races, picking out routes and varying our normal routines will be vital in order to keep our minds and motivation strong. Although I don’t live in Iowa anymore, I always try to plan a few long runs into my training plan along Clear Lake in the late summer and early fall.
Where do you like to run in Iowa? What trails around the state do you enjoy most? Why do you love them so much? Comment below, I’d love to read all about it. And who knows- maybe I’ll have to make a trip to your favorite places and write about it!
About me: Although I am a Kansas Citian now, I was once a North Iowa girl, hailing from a little town called Rudd near Mason City. I started seriously running about four years ago, although I have always enjoyed being active through walking as well as participating in boot camp and similar classes. Through running I have discovered a love that I did not know existed. Growing up I was never the most athletic person on the team and I always had to work hard to be average, but as an adult I have realized that I have skill in endurance running and absolutely love it. I am not the fastest runner out there, but I am not the slowest either. In addition to being a runner, I am a college instructor, wife and mother to three children aged 4, 6, and 8 years. I have a personal blog at www.mamagottarun.blogspot.com and can also be found on Twitter and Instagram @mamagottarun. I have run the full, half and I35 Challenge with the IMT DMM races.
