Brad Dains, Capital Striders
A STORY OF INSPIRATION
Brad Dains’ story is not that much different from others who take up running as a vehicle for better health, but his story takes a world of “cant’s” and turns it into a world of endless possibilities. As a teenager, Brad suffered a stroke after a freak knee surgery accident and was told that he may never walk again. In his early 20’s, Brad was told that he was likely to die if he continued on a self-destructive path of an addiction to food. 12 years after he decided to take that first step out the front door and with the love and support of his family of 6, Brad has completed 11 ultra-marathon races (including 100 consecutive miles on a treadmill) and aims to show the world that we are not limited by our past.

Join Brad as you learn about his journey of Faith, Family and Fitness and learn how to turn your past into the fuel for your future

INCLUSION IN ENDURANCE ATHLETICS Thirty-five years ago a father took his quadriplegic son through a five mile race in a regular wheelchair. When they got home his son put into his computer “hey Dad, when we’re racing it feels like my disability disappears”. So the father-son team – “Team Hoyt” – kept racing, and have completed over one thousand events including multiple marathons and ironman triathlons. Their inspiring story led to the formation of myTEAM TRIUMPH, an athletic ride-along program created for children, teens, adults and veterans with disabilities who not normally be able to participate in endurance events. Come hear how myTEAM TRIUMPH promotes inclusion and authentic relationships with people with disabilities through the teamwork environment of outdoor endurance events such as the IMT Des Moines Marathon.
