Speaker Series

The MidAmerican Energy Speaker Series coincides with the Scheels Sports & Fitness Expo on Friday, October 17 from 3:00 to 8:00 p.m. and Saturday, October 18 from 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. Athletes registered for any of the IMT Des Moines Marathon races are welcome to attend the MidAmerican Energy Speaker Series sessions, which are also free and open to the public.

MidAmerican Energy Speaker Series presentations will focus on the sport of running and active participation in healthy lifestyles. Topics include official IMT Des Moines Marathon course presentations, the benefits of personal trainers and coaches, proper stretching, finding the right shoe for you and of course, Jeff Galloway.

FRIDAY, OCTOBER 17, 2014

WELCOME Receive an official welcome to the Scheels Sports & Fitness Expo from race emcee Creigh Kelley. He will introduce you to IMT Des Moines Marathon activities including the MidAmerican Speaker Series. Stop by the MidAmerican Speaker Series meet and greet table for trivia questions and prize giveaways over the course of race weekend.

COURSE PRESENTATION Chris Burch, Director of Racing and Events, will present a mile by mile ‘run through’ of the IMT Des Moines Marathon & Half Marathon and Bankers Trust Marathon Relay presented by Iowa Games courses, as well as The Principal Financial Group 5K Road Race and Lifepoint Dental Partners Kids Run. Rich Green, Medical Director, will also identify Mercy Medical Center First Aid services offered and what to do in the event of an emergency on race day.

MAKE SURE YOU ARE DOING THE RIGHT THINGS THE LAST 36 HOURS Matt Zepeda is the head coach of Zoom Performance and has been coaching runners and endurance athletes of all levels for over 10 years.  All coaches at Zoom Performance understand that each athlete is different and provides customized programs to each individual to help them reach their next level.  Matt will present on what to do and not do the last hours before your race.  He will talk about pre race nutrition and hydration, sleep, final mental preparation, proper warm up, stretching, nutrition/food during the race, and post race strategies for proper recovery and when to race again.

LEARN TO RUN CLINIC Come learn the basic principles of running form that will help increase efficiency, decrease injuries and will make you a stronger runner. Taught by Altra’s Endurance Team member and 100 mile champion, Zac Marion.

RUN INJURY FREE
Jeff Galloway transformed himself from an overweight 13-year-old to an Olympian through learning and applying the principles of training.  Over more than 40 years, he has coached over a million runners and walkers to their goals through Galloway training programs, retreats, running schools and books.  His methods allow those at all fitness levels to enjoy the accomplishment of finishing 13.1 miles with almost no risk of injury.

SEE DANE RUN Dane Rauschenberg made his mark on the running world as the man who ran 52 marathons in 52 consecutive weekends in 2006 which included our own Des Moines Marathon. As an extreme athlete who has also run a 202-mile relay solo and completed a 350-mile run up the coast of Oregon, he doesn’t just know running, he has explored it to the deepest reaches of its mental, physical and emotional boundaries. Throughout his journeys, the one message he wants to leave with everyone is that regardless of the task ahead, one should always Ignore The Impossible.

CANCER SURVIVORS Looking for tools to improve performance and reduce incidence of injury? Mary is the Health and Fitness Director of Above & Beyond Cancer.  She trains, educates and coaches cancer survivors to reduce the chance of relapse, through the implementation of holistic personal wellness programs that address all aspects of healthy living. Mary will be demonstrating the Functional Movement Screening Assessment, a standardized medium developed by PT Gray Cook that may evaluate mobility, stability and functionality of your body. She will also share testimony, of improved holistic health, of Cancer Survivors, as they trained for the Peak of Machu Picchu and beyond.

ELITE ATHLETE FIELD A panel discussion led by Creigh Kelley and John Tope, IMT Des Moines Marathon elite athlete director, will feature the IMT Des Moines Marathon & Half Marathon elite athlete field. It is a great time to ‘check out the competition’ while asking just what it takes to be considered an elite athlete.
