Relay Overview

The Bankers Trust Marathon Relay presented by Iowa Games is designed to offer a team experience to what has historically been regarded as an individual endurance event.  This race is intended for running teams of all skill levels and speeds.

Each team will have 5 members.  Teams can be any combination of male or female, but must have at least 2 female members to qualify as a co-ed team.  Teams must be able to provide documentation that all 5 members work for the same company to qualify as a corporate team.

The Bankers Trust Marathon Relay presented by Iowa Games takes place on the IMT Des Moines Marathon course.  The 1st member of the team will complete the first 4 miles of the course, the 2nd the next 6, the 3rd the next 5, the 4th the next 5, and the 5th member will complete the final 6.2 miles of the 26.2 mile course.

Staging
Work Systems Rehab & Fitness once again hosts the Bankers Trust Marathon Relay staging area at their downtown Des Moines clinic for the 7th year in a row.  Parking for each team's personal vehicle is available behind their building. Individual team members should find offsite parking on their own.

Race Day

Weather
October tends to be a fairly dry month in Iowa. Athletes are likely to experience a bit of a chill in the early morning air on race day.  Average lows for Des Moines in October are in the lower 50's with highs in the upper 60's. Many athletes are already across the finish line line before the afternoon temperatures arrive. The IMT Des Moines Marathon relies on the weather team at ABC5 for up to the minute weather updates race weekend.

Old race shirts, a dingy sweatshirt, or a pair of gardening gloves are a great examples of ways to stay warm while waiting for the start of the race.  Your body will begin to warm up after the first couple miles of the race and most athletes want to begin shedding layers.  Volunteers from the Iowa Homeless Youth Centers will pick up any discarded clothing that is left behind along the course.  Food that is leftover from the finish line festivities is also donated to this important nonprofit organization in our community.

Parking
There are a variety of parking options in downtown Des Moines.  You do not have to put money in the parking meters on the street after 6:00 p.m. on Friday, or at any time on Saturday or Sunday.

We invite you to take advantage of parking at many of the downtown parking ramps on Saturday and Sunday.  City of Des Moines parking ramps are located at East 6th/Grand Avenue, 3rd Street and Court Avenue, 4th Street/Grand Avenue, 5th Street/George Watson Powell Parkway, 5th/Walnut Avenue, 5th Street/Locust Avenue and 7th Street/Locust Avenue.

Parking is also available at Principal Park, home of the Iowa Cubs, six blocks south of the Locust Street Bridge on 2nd Avenue.

Principal Park | One Line Drive | Des Moines, IA 50309

Please be respectful of No Parking signs in the downtown area, especially on race day.  Chances are likely that the No Parking signs are posted on our behalf.  Your vehicle will be towed.

Riverfront YMCA | 101 Locust Street | Des Moines, IA 50309

Baggage Claim/Information
The Lint Companies Baggage Claim will be offered in front of the YMCA along the Principal Riverwalk. The IMT Des Moines Marathon strongly encourages you to use a clear "see through" plastic bag at baggage claim. You may want to use your bag from athlete packet pick up to store your personal items during the race.

Simply return with your race number/bib after the race to claim your belongings. A driver's license or ID may be requested. The IMT Des Moines Marathon is not responsible for any lost, stolen or unclaimed bags from the baggage claim. All bags left during the race are subject to search. Please contact the IMT Des Moines Marathon directly after the race if you discover you have forgotten your athlete bag.

Nondenominational Service
Stephen Taylor, Pastor of the Monroe United Methodist Church in Monroe, Iowa will lead a brief nondenominational service at 7:15 a.m. on the Principal Riverwalk in front of the YMCA. Anyone and everyone who would like to attend the nondenominational service is welcome.

Stretching
Gigi's Pilates Studio personal fitness instructors will lead a series of group warm up and stretching exercises before the start of the IMT Des Moines Marathon races from 7:15 to 7:45 a.m. and again from 8:00 to 8:15 a.m. Look for them at Simon Estes Amphitheatre and join in.

Start Line

The IMT Des Moines Marathon starts in downtown Des Moines on the Locust Street Bridge and heads east towards the Iowa State Capitol along Locust Street. Athletes will pass through the East Village and Court Avenue Districts while running on the downtown streets of Des Moines during the early miles of the race.

Push Rim athletes will line up in front of seeded elite athletes and the rest of the IMT Des Moines Marathon & Half Marathon and Bankers Trust Marathon Relay field.  Please self select your starting point, or where you line up, at the start line based on your predicted finish time.  A general rule of thumb to follow for first-timers is to let faster runners to the front followed by slower runners and then walkers to the back of the pack.

The IMT Des Moines Marathon will feature signage with minute per mile pace signs that can assist you in self selecting your start.

It is not always easy to determine who is a faster runner and who is a walker before the race has begun.  Don't be afraid to ask an IMT Des Moines Marathon Race Committee member or a Running Room Pace Team Leader for assistance in determining where to line up at the start.  You can also stop by the Race Information/Volunteers, or Lint Companies Baggage Claim booth for assistance.

Bicycles, inline skates, roller skates, baby strollers, scooters, wheeled vehicles (except event registered wheelchairs), and dogs/pets are not allowed on the IMT Des Moines Marathon course.

Finish Line

The IMT Des Moines Marathon finishes back where it started, on the Locust Street Bridge.  Athletes crossing the finish line will be greeted by key volunteers from the Mercy Medical Center First Aid Station. Athletes will be assisted in the removal of the Sportag™ timing device from their shoe.

All finishers in the IMT Des Moines Marathon & Half Marathon, Bankers Trust Marathon Relay, and Principal Financial Group 5K Road Race will receive a finisher medal.

MarathonFoto will be on hand to take post race candid photos.  You can click here to be notified when your photos are available for purchase following the race.
