“I knew running a marathon would not be easy but with my sister and I training/running together and for a purpose I knew we could do it. Our late grandfather of eight long years died from Lymphoma so we buckled down and raised awareness and funds for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society (LLS). We met good people – friends that we have today – as we trained each week. We learned a great deal on this journey and we are very thankful for the IMT Des Moines Marathon. Chris, his team, and all of the volunteers were so helpful along the way. Many cities don’t have the luxury of such an experience in their own backyard. We finished(!) our first marathon in Des Moines (2008) with the support and dedication of the Team n’ Training Coaches and LLS. WE DID IT!” - Gina David

PD Walkers The PD Walkers team is a group formed in 2008 with the hopes of raising awareness of Parkinson’s disease. PD Walkers team members also fundraise to support the Iowa Chapter of APDA and help the Chapter realize its mission “To Ease the Burden to Find the Cure”. The founder, LaDona Molander, 44, was diagnosed at the age of 32 and believes that exercise and attitude have helped slow the progression of her PD. She is encouraging those diagnosed with PD and others affected by PD to join her on her walks and help spread awareness of Parkinson’s disease and in return reap the benefits of exercise.
The past 3 years brought more than 150 PD Walkers together to participate in an event at the IMT Des Moines Marathon and they raised over $30,000 for the IA Chapter of APDA. Go to www.pdwalkers.org to join the 2011 team, PD Walkers at the Des Moines Marathon. PD Walkers team members and friends are able to set up their own personal web page and collect online donations. If you need help, please email LaDona or call 515.953.8474.

Cystic fibrosis is an inherited chronic disease that affects the lungs and digestive system of about 30,000 children and adults in the United States. A defective gene and its protein product cause the body to produce unusually thick, sticky mucus that clogs the lungs and leads to life-threatening lung infections. It also obstructs the pancreas and stops natural enzymes from helping the body break down and absorb food. For more information on CF or the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation visit www.cff.org.
